Rocky Mountains Out of Mole Hills

Hello again one and all.  So still going strong.  Me and Charlie woke up pretty snug in the van with the rain hammering down on the roof making that awesome sound.  There was no rush to do anything in particular apart from the fact that i thought my tongue was going to fall out my mouth because it was so dry.  So we got up and awake pretty fast and straight to McDonalds where after getting them to fill up several bottles of water and downing them we sat down in the corner to use the electricity and internet for the best part of the morning.   Charlie was trying to sort out his life emailing and texting people who might still be in town with a sofa or a bed for him, also looking for rooms he might be able to rent.  I of course spent the morning on Facebook, where else?  And replying to emails and writing this blog.

Charlie found a room in a flat to go have a look at so about 1ish we went to go check it out.  I sat outside in the van a devoured some dry frosted shredded wheat while he checked it out.  About 10 mins later he leaned out the window and said he was taking it.  So we hauled all his bags up to the top floor and I had a look around.  It was a modest place but pretty damn perfect.  In fact I was quiet jealous of the set up he had going for the next year.  Good on him.  The time had come now we said fairwell and I was off on the road again by myself!

It was a good feeling to be getting on the road properly and on my way on my own.  It was only about 200km to the U.S boarder.  Not an encounter I was looking forward to!  I had heard from many different people that its far from a walk in the park and being the state I was in I was likely to just be refused entry!  Having close to no money, a criminal record, no family in the U.S and the intention to stay indefinitely.  It was an easy drive and arrived quite quickly however the petrol had taken a savage hit!  I had $15.15 cash and it was about half an hour before reaching the boarder and the tank was nearly on empty.  This was not a place I fancied running out of petrol.  Nothing for miles!  So crossing my fingers for about 30 km that it was going to get me to a gas station I carried on.  And it did!  The woman at the station was so helpful  I explained the situation that  I had about 60 U.S dollars in the bank and I didn't want to speand it because I needed something in the bank so I at least had some money going over the boarder.  She was lovely and said petrol is cheaper over the boarder anyway.  So i put my $15.15 in and went on.

i got to the boarder and went in the wrong way to start off!  Not good.  I already had armed police coming up to ask me questions.  I explained my self and went in the right way.  A grim que first and then I got there and they were the most friendly lovely people ever.  The guy was joking around with me and guessed I was a snowboarder.  The woman was doing the same.  She got in the van and had a poke around.  Then they directed me inside the building where I had to get a travel document.  And that was all fine.  6 Bucks.  Cheap!  The woman was lovely we had a laugh.  She was pretty funny in fact!  I think she might have even flirted!  Easy peasey!   What was everyone talking about.

That little line throught the trees on the hill is the boarder between Canada and U.S.A.

So Im state side!  The fools!  I kept going for ages.  More gorgeous scenery!  Past stunning lake after stunning lake!  The snowy mountains had slowly shrunk away and were becoming beautify covered in bright green trees.  Everywhere looked so rich and full of life.  Its such a gorgeous part of the world!  I went past a lake called Moyie.  One of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.  I loved looking at the water there is something about it I just can't take my eyes off it.  I can't wait to get to the sea!  As I kept going there were so many clichés that just kept popping up,  putting a smile on my face.  Little Motels, old rusted farmyard equipment on the side of the road, things like that.  And as i drove through the little towns things like Wallmart and Macy's it was all so much fun to look at so interesting and as I started getting to slightly larger places I really felt like I was in America.  Everything was so big!

I then was coming up to a town called Newport about 5km away and I drove past a hitcher.  I was going too fast and I wasn't sure about the look of him.  So I drove on.  A minute later I pulled over and rethought.  I had been there before and I had never picked up a hitcher by myself but I thought now is the time to start if there ever was!  So i drove back and picked him up.  Turned out his car was broken and he only wanted a lift to work in Newport.  Bit of an anti climax but he was a nice guy.  Really helpful.  He gave me directions through newport onto route 90 and told me about getting under the table work around here and how easy it was and then the guy gave me a little cheeky summin summin for the road.  Good lad.

On i went and having decided that a place called Spokane was a good place to stop for the night I filled up with more petrol  put about 50 U.S in and carried on.  It wasn't far.  It was the biggest place I had seen so far and like a mini Vegus.  I in fact saw a sign all over the place that was clearly the city's slogan.  "What happens in Vegus, Happens in Spokane."  I doubt that.  So I drove on throughout the city following the directions onto Route 90 because I thought it best to get out of the city before I park up the van and sleep in it.  Then before I new it I was on the Interstate freeway headed to Seattle!  Being very tired and not quite sure what to do I pulled over at a petrol station and parked up there for the night.  Surrounded by nothing but the free way a closed petrol station and empty fields.  It looked like a good setting for a horror movie or at least an axe welding murderer.  I hope to see you tomorrow!
